## What new pvc involves, and when you need it
UPVC cladding, trims and rainwater goods handle the parts of a building that used to need painting every few years: gable cladding, dormer cheeks, porch and bay details, box ends, window and door reveals, and the guttering and downpipes that carry water away. Fitted properly, they take those items off your maintenance list entirely.

The important word is properly. UPVC is a rain screen and a finish; it is not a waterproofing system in its own right. Every board, trim and joint has to be detailed so water is thrown clear, and anything behind it must be sound and dry before it is covered. Fitted over wet timber or with joints that let water in and not out, it hides a problem and feeds it.

We survey what is behind: timber condition, fixing grounds, ventilation, existing flashings and abutments, and where water currently runs. The specification then covers removal, timber repairs, ventilation, the cladding or trim system, colour, and the rainwater goods sized for the roof they serve, priced in writing at one fixed figure.

### Who this is for

- Gables, dormers, porches and bays with tired painted timber or panelling
- Owners who want to stop repainting exterior details every few years
- Properties with mismatched or ageing guttering, downpipes and trims
- Anyone re-roofing or replacing fascias who wants the whole roofline consistent
- Landlords and commercial premises reducing external maintenance liabilitiesRing the office on 07460 072891 or use the contact page and we will give you a realistic survey date on the call. You can also see everything we do across Medway or read our customer reviews.

## What happens if it is left
Painted timber details on gables and dormers are the highest-maintenance parts of a house and the hardest to reach. Once the coating goes, water gets into joints and end grain, and because nobody looks closely at a gable, the decay is usually well established before it is noticed.

The bigger risk is UPVC fitted badly over that decay. Cladding screwed onto damp timber with no ventilation and no water exit keeps the moisture in permanently, so the rot accelerates out of sight. Everything looks smart from the pavement while the structure behind quietly loses section.

Undersized or poorly detailed rainwater goods cause damage on the ground instead. Overflowing gutters and downpipes discharging onto paving soak walls, bridge damp proof courses, and turn into internal damp, a repair inside the house caused by a fitting outside it.

### Common mistakes we are called in to undo

- Cladding over wet or decayed timber instead of repairing it first
- No ventilation or drainage path behind the cladding, trapping moisture against the structure
- Face-fixing with unsuitable fixings that rust and streak the new boards
- Joints and trims arranged so water runs behind the boards rather than out over them
- Mixing incompatible gutter systems, leaving joints that never seal properly

## How the job runs, step by step

- Step 1

### Inspection
We check what is behind: timber condition, fixing grounds, ventilation, existing flashings, and how water currently moves across the area to be clad.

- Step 2

### Specification
Removal scope, timber repairs, cladding or trim system, colour and profile, ventilation and rainwater goods sizing, all priced in writing at a fixed figure.

- Step 3

### Strip and repair
Old boarding and rainwater goods removed, decayed timber cut out and replaced with treated sections, and fixing grounds made sound and dry.

- Step 4

### Install
Cladding, trims and flashings fitted with correct laps, drainage and ventilation, using colour-matched non-corroding fixings, then gutters and downpipes run to falls and gulleys.

- Step 5

### Test, verify and complete
Rainwater goods water-tested, details checked, work photographed where it is out of sight, waste removed and the finished job walked with you.

## What you get out of it

### Maintenance taken off the list
UPVC does not rot and does not need repainting, which removes recurring access and decoration costs on high-level details.

### Sound structure underneath
Because we strip and repair before cladding, the timber behind is dry and sound rather than hidden.

### Water routed out, not in
Laps, trims and flashings are detailed so water is thrown clear of the structure instead of tracking behind the boards.

### Consistent roofline appearance
Cladding, fascias, soffits and rainwater goods matched in one colour and system make the whole property look deliberate.

### Correct gutter capacity
Profiles and outlets sized to the roof area stop the overflowing that causes damp walls below.

### Roofing and carpentry in-house
Flashings, timber repairs and roof-edge details are handled by the same team fitting the UPVC.

## New PVC in detail: materials, methods and variations

### Materials and components
Cladding is available as shiplap and open-V weatherboard profiles and as flat panel with joint trims, in white, greys, black and woodgrain finishes. We use full-thickness board with matched external and internal corner trims, starter trims and edge details rather than improvising junctions with sealant.

Trims cover a wide range of jobs: window and door reveal boards, box ends, bay and porch details, soffit and fascia trims and general capping. Each has a correct fixing method and a correct water-shedding orientation, and the difference between fitting them right and fitting them quickly is visible within a few years.

Rainwater goods are specified by roof area and pitch: half-round, square-line and deep-flow profiles with matched brackets, outlets, stop ends and shoes, all within one manufacturer's system so joints seal as designed. Fixings are stainless or polymer-headed so nothing rusts down a new white board.

### Details, ventilation and situations
Ventilation and drainage behind cladding matter as much as the boards. Where a clad area encloses timber structure, air movement and a drainage route mean any water that does get in can leave and the timber can dry. That is designed in, not left to chance.

Junctions are where UPVC work is won or lost: abutments to render or brick need a flashing or sealed trim that throws water out, verges and gable edges need the roof covering detailed over the cladding, and reveals need to shed water away from frames rather than channelling it into the joint.

Common applications in Medway include gable and dormer cladding on post-war housing, porch and bay detail renewal, box ends on hipped roofs, and full roofline packages combining cladding, fascia, soffit and guttering while access is already in place for roofing work.

### Residential versus commercial
On houses the work is judged from the pavement: consistent colour across the roofline, straight lines, tight corner trims, no visible rusting fixings. Access is planned around the household with paving and planting protected.

On commercial buildings the priorities are durability at accessible heights, impact resistance at low level, gutter capacity on larger roof areas, and phasing so entrances and trading are not obstructed.

## New PVC: your questions answered
How much does UPVC cladding cost?It depends on the area, the height and access, the profile chosen and how much timber repair is found once the old boarding is off. We survey, allow realistically for repairs, and give one fixed written price.

How long does the work take? Most gable, dormer or roofline packages on a house are two to five days including access. Larger properties or significant timber repairs take longer, confirmed with the quote.

Can you clad over the existing timber?Only where the timber behind is sound and dry, and even then we prefer to strip so we can see it. Cladding over decayed or damp timber traps the moisture and accelerates the rot out of sight.

How long does UPVC last?It is a long-life material that does not rot and needs no repainting; an occasional wash keeps the finish looking right. Its service life on the building depends on the fixings, the detailing and the structure behind it.

What colours are available?White, black, anthracite grey, other greys, rosewood and various woodgrain finishes, with matched trims, gutters and fixings so the roofline reads as one system.

Will you replace the guttering at the same time?Usually the sensible choice, since access is already in place and the new gutters can be sized correctly and matched to the new boards. We price it as part of the job.

Does the work need scaffolding?Gable, dormer and roofline work does, both for safety and for accuracy. Access is included in the written price rather than added later.

Do you cover my area?Medway, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rainham, Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Sheerness and the surrounding Kent towns.
